RAM - 2020

RAM was a nocturnal exhibition with as its starting point an old sheep pen at a stone's throw from the former island of Schokland (world heritage) and the well-known architectural village of Nagele in the Noordoostpolder.

With RAM we refer to the history of the place where sheep used to be kept. We present the work of thirteen artists who relate to the place, its surroundings, history or future.

RAM is an initiative of id11 in cooperation with Prins te Paard and ReRun Producties with the support of De Verlichte Boerderijenroute Noordoostpolder and the Cultuurmakersfonds.

artists
Participating artists were: Albert Geertjes, Denis Oudendijk, Elena Redaelli, Karin van der Molen, Liset Moerdijk & Rutger Bergboer, Marjan Laaper, Niels Post, Pat van Boeckel, Pim Palsgraaf, Robert Roelink, Rolina Nell, Sigrid Hamelink and Wies Noest.

location, dates and times
RAM was to be ridden in one direction. The route started at the junction of Sluitgatweg/ Havenweg near the village of Nagele, changed to Ramsweg and ended under the Ramspol Bridge. RAM was a route of about 6 km, along the work of thirteen artists, which is best done by car. Dates & times: Friday 11 - Sunday 13 and Friday 18 - Sunday 20 December 2020 from 16.30 - 22.00.

eb - 2020

eb is a 2.5 km tour of the work of eleven artists, around the Enserkerk on the former island of Schokland in the Noordoostpolder. It is low tide from July 26 to October 25, 2020.

Low tide is a phase of the tide where the seawater descends or goes down. On the former beach of Schokland it has been low tide for a long time. The Noordoostpolder officially fell dry on September 9, 1942, in the middle of World War II. The islands of Schokland and Urk came within the dikes of the new polder.

At low tide, treasures washed ashore, and unfortunately nowadays more and more trash, become visible. Beachcombing appeals to our imagination, stimulates our curiosity, and at the same time confronts us with our behavior in the form of washed-up items. But on the reclaimed land around Schokland traces of the past and present are still found almost every week. From old wooden ships that have sunk, prints of the first footsteps of human habitation, to crashed bombers from the Second World War as well as abandoned plastic bottles, chip containers and cans.

After the coronavirus swept over us like a tidal wave, the ebb seems to have set in. What remains of valuable experiences, new insights, inspiration or discarded items and opinions?

With eb, we make a cautious attempt to turn the tide and move with the waves. We want to give artists an opportunity again to make works and to inspire, amaze and/or confront people. In an area where art is not self-evident and at a location where ebb is, for the time being, the status quo.

eb is an initiative of ReRun Productions with support from id11, commissioned by Cultuurbedrijf Noordoostpolder and made possible by the VSBfonds

about A woman

about A woman is a research series in which female artists enter into dialogue about their position in the art world.

The initiative for about A woman was taken by visual artist Maritsa van Luttikhuizen, who has now sought to collaborate with Astrid Moors, Debbie Voerman and Rolina Nell.

Under the title about A woman, the first exhibition was organized in 2013 at art venue De Witte Slagerij in Rotterdam. How is it now -seven years later- with emancipation in the arts? A year ago Mama Cash published a research report on the position of women artists in the Netherlands, with the conclusion that the visual presence of women in art is still far from average.

With about A woman, we highlight the work of ourselves and female colleagues and start a conversation about our position.

Around International Women's Day 2020 we organized an exhibition in Rotterdam with the work of eight female artists under the title about A woman -grilhood-. about A woman offered in this exhibition a reflection on the girl from different perspectives and in different disciplines. Within the context of the exhibition we talked to guests, guest speakers and the audience about the position of the female artist in the current art field.

artist-in-residence 2017 - 2020

After making the barn suitable for non-agricultural activities and creating a guesthouse, we shaped our activities on the farm in the Noordoostpolder until the end of 2020 and offered artists, writers, musicians and other makers space to realize and present (new) works in relation to the unique environment that the Noordoostpolder offers and/or the specific space, consisting of the original stables. The production and presentation area were connected to each other. Whereby id11 fulfilled a pioneering function in the Noordoostpolder as a production and presentation location for contemporary professional artists.

Per 31 December 2020 we have stopped our artist-in-residence at the farm in the Noordoostpolder because we had to look for another place to live/work.

artists & musicians
Jeffry Koopman, Daan den Houter, Lobke Burgers, Anja Vermeer, Inge Hoefnagel, Mia van den Burg, Pim van Halem, Nilesh Shidhpura, Wies Noest, Rosa Everts, Egied Simons, Lineke Hansma-Imthorn, Marie Claire Krell and Wouter Sibum. Roufaida, Gitta de Ridder and Hunting the Robot worked on new songs there. The European Stage Europe Network was guest with seven emerging bands.

projects in delft 2008 - 2016

From 2008 - 2016, id11 organized artists-in-residence projects in Delft, the Netherlands. Empty property was temporarily used as living and working space for (international) artists. The houses, apartments, shops or offices themselves where an important factor in the production of the new artworks. Participating artists created site-specific work. id11 had no permanent living or working space in Delft for the realization of projects but used what was available or arises to create a plan for a project. id11’s artist-in-residence program was dependent on the availability of temporary spaces. id11 organized within the European network CreArt the artists-in-residence projects DELFT OP ZICHT AiR (2013), CarArt AiR (2014), the seminar SHIFTING AiR STRATEGIES (2013) and encounter AiR for Experiment - is there enough room for experiment in the cultural landscape of Europe? (2016) in Delft. Below more information and images about the realised (artists-in-residence) projects in Delft.

ENCOUNTER AiR FOR EXPERIMENT - 2016

id11 organized in cooperation with DutchCulture Center for International Cooperation|TransArtists, the encounter AiR for Experiment - is there enough room for experiment in the cultural landscape of Europe? in the framework of CreArt. How can artist organizations, artist-in-residence programs and local governments work together at local level to enhance the European cultural landscape?

Artist organizations and artist-in-residence programs provide open, relational, social spaces embedded in the locality of a village or city. They connect artists and create communities of practitioners: to test ideas, take creative risks and explore new directions in their artistic practice. Many of these initiatives operate internationally and function as local platforms for the production and presentation of new work, as well as the development of discourse, knowledge and understanding, including in the arts and in society. Often they engage in experimental manner in social, economic and cultural structures of a city or region.

Medium-sized cities in Europe are embedded in the structures and cultural networks of a region, seeking to offer a counterweight to the capital cities that often recruit all the arts and culture. How can dialogue and collaboration between local governments and artist organizations take place in this context? What short and long-term effects can art projects generate for a city or a region? These and other questions where explored in several case studies together with policymakers, artist organizations and artist-in-residence programs from the Netherlands and different regions in Europe.

One of the starting points of the program was the published book Artist-Run-Europe. Initiated by Pallas Projects in Dublin, this part how-to manual, part history, and part socio-political critique, looks at the conditions, organizational models, and role of artist-led practice within contemporary art and society within Europe. Accordingly AiR Platform NL and Platform BK instigated an investigation about the parameters of the artist-run model, operating within the setting of small cities and villages in the Netherlands. With the aim to compose, following the outcomes of the program, the first draft of a document of recommendations; working together towards more diverse arts-ecologies.

SEMINAR SHIFTING AiR STRATEGIES - 2013

id11 organized in cooperation with DutchCulture Center for International Cooperation|TransArtists, Satellietgroep and Wander the seminar SHIFTING AiR STATEGIES in the framework of CreArt. Network of Cities for Artistic Creation and Mutual Artist-in-Residence Impulse Russia-Netherlands. artist-in-residence is a changing phenomenon. Hosts ánd guests develop new strategies, or they reinvent the ways they operate, because of shifting economic, political, and cultural circumstances. The seminar brought artist-in-residence programs together from the Netherlands, Europe, and Russia, to share the latest insights in artist-in-residence strategies. Some opt for interdisciplinary research, others for integrating artistic goals with commercial activities. Some focus on the specificity of their location, others try to connect to the needs of other parties. Which new artist-in-residence strategies are developed? What are the consequences for collaboration, programming, funding? How can networks, cultural organizations, funds, and governments connect to these developments? Experts will shared their visions with us in workshop-explorations, amongst them: Jan Willem Schrofer, former director of the Rijksakademie Amsterdam - Georgi Nikich, director of the Moscow Union of Exhibitions Halls - Leontine Meijer van Mensch, lecturer of heritage theory and professional ethics at the Reinwardt Academy, Amsterdam. Moderator of the day was: Floor van Spaendonck, manager Platform bij HET NIEUWE INSTITUUT. DELFT OP ZICHT - 2013

In August and September 2013 id11 organized the artist-in-residence project DELFT OP ZICHT within the European network CreArt. CreArt is a collaborative venture between 12 European cities: Arad (Romania), Kaunas (Lithuania), Genoa (Italy),  Delft (the Netherlands), Harghita County (Romania), Valladolid (Spain), Aveiro (Portugal), Linz (Austria), Kristiansand (Norway), Lecce (Italy), Pardubice (Czech Republic) and Vilnius (Lithuania). Participating artists created site-specific work related to the location. The project refers to the painting ‘View of Delft’ by Vermeer and challenges artists to make contemporary variants. Eight European artists were selected on the basis of their project proposal, in which the relationship with Delft was visible. The selected artists explored Delft and sampled the city ‘on trial basis’ for two months. DELFT OP ZICHT has several meanings. It is a twist of the title of the Vermeer painting ‘View of Delft’ (Gezicht op Delft). In DELFT OP ZICHT the words are in a different order. ‘Op zicht’ means ‘on trial’, as when you have something on trial for a test period. After this test period, one can decide to keep what was tested or to return it. In 2010, the first edition of id11 DELFT OP ZICHT was organized in the Kadmium Art Centre and this edition was held there again. Kadmium is housed in an old school building. It has four classrooms, a small staircase, a beautiful hall with a long corridor, and a square in front of it. During the regular opening hours of Kadmium, the artworks in development could be seen by visitors. The participating artists presented their work every Friday afternoon during the series of artist talks “bij_wijze_van_SPREKEN”. A special feature of this AiR project was that each artist liaised with a curator for two months. The curator and the artist could have practical or substantive discussions. DELFT OP ZICHT concluded with a final presentation in the form of a public show.
